Mountain Stream, Suspended pigment, charcoal, pastel, 64X52 inches

BARBARA GRINELL

Artist Statement
These paintings seem to reflect the mountains in which I live. Living in the Catskills has been both an adventure and a sanctuary. I have learnt how to plant a garden and then how to let nature take its course. I feel tiny in the scheme of things – and then – as big as the light rolling over the hills. I have seen how change, uncertainty, and loss govern life. And yet, even with these tricky companions, I can celebrate each day. So, really, I suppose it’s the mountains which live in me.
