Black and white infrared (from medium format film) archival pigment print 2012/2012 23" x 18" / framed: 30.5" x 25"

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I look for visual metaphors in the landscape. My photographs focus primarily on dramatic cloud formations, sinuous bodies of water, and sensuous trees and foliage. I use black and white infrared film because it captures the visible spectrum as well as the infrared light that lies beyond what the human eye can see. This medium accentuates the contrast between light and shadow, enhancing our sense of the unknowable and the mysterious, as well as underscoring the limitations of our perception. I continue to explore what I see before me, seeking more information and greater comprehension, even though I realize that this is akin to contemplating infinity: by definition, one can never actually arrive at that point - one can only approach it.

We all face the restrictions of the human condition. But for me, when I view a scene before me and am filled with a sense of wonder, I try to “get my arms around” what I see. I use the camera in an attempt to capture the essence of these feelings, later working to fashion my expression (the final print) in such a way as to faithfully commit to memory what I perceived and to augment this in my personal interpretation of photographic truth. Behind all of this, too, lies the struggle against impermanence and a resistance to loss. Savoring the moments that add up to a life, with emphasis on those pauses in the face of awe, is the driving force that underscores my work and defines my spirit.
