ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Having grown up a girl during the 60s and 70s in this country, I vacillate between embracing and rejecting traditional gender roles. My work explores via parody, the relationship between self identity and culture-- questioning through process, imagery and form, how each may be represented visually.

Satirical interpretations of Freudian psychology, Greek mythology and popular culture lace their way through the autobiographical content. Layers of painted pattern, image and text are "built" in such a way that seemingly harmless cartoons are juxtaposed with references to sexuality, science and material wants. Erased with an electric sander, redrawn and re-layered, images are embedded in the layers of space – some seen clearly, some partially obscured, denied or encased. The newest paintings on birch are all done on a single, uninterrupted surface. Works on paper incorporate a variety of materials.

The concept of desire is central to the newest work– consumption of material goods ("Buy Everything at Least Once"), the lure of luxury and extravagance, food fantasies and issues of control are all given a voice. Text is used as a layered element, to play personal ruminations off of cultural directives, exploring the comfort that nostalgia can offer, as well as my own desire for personal power.

My work is about self-definition on a personal level, but is relevant I feel, on a generational level.
