My work is a conversation about gender equality, womens’ issues, and the concept of identity in its different states of metamorphosis – ideas that I put out to be consumed and, with luck, internalized. My approach is rooted in the human condition. It is activist art: societal, feminist, and humanistic. Frequently, I draw inspiration from life experience and current events. I am most comfortable working in a narrative form where convention is defied and the greater authorities are questioned. Self-portraiture is a technique I utilize as a way of having a first-person account of the body politic and reclaiming the woman as subject. A common theme I analyze is navigating the girl experience: the struggles that are part of growing up female and the societal pressures that are transferred to us as adult women. We grow into these bodies that develop quicker than we can make sense of. Then, hopefully, we learn to be comfortable in them. I am interested in the beauty that lies in the evolution of a girl coming into her own. There will be self-doubt. There will be a battle with her own insecurities at times, but she will come out of it empowered and able to take on the world.

I create art to reach people and get them thinking about ideas of equality and civil rights. I believe in cultivating opportunity and a level playing field regardless of gender, sexuality, or socioeconomic background.
