ARTIST'S STATEMENT

The souvenir speaks to a context of origin through a language of longing, for it is not an object arising out of need or use value; it is an object arising out of the necessarily insatiable demands of nostalgia.*

Within my work I am interested in exploring the themes of; the souvenir, ornamentation, memory, longing, and nostalgia associated with the collection of personal objects. I am interested in how ordinary everyday objects transcend the mundane through the association of memory thus becoming personal and precious.

Currently my work is exploring my heritage of being part Native American. I am not interested in the symbolic historical imagery associated with the Chippewa and Ojibwa Tribes, rather, I have been investigating a particular area where my family is from and still lives to this day. I am interested in their way of living, how objects of necessity were made, as well as how hand skills and trades were passed down through generations.

My work draws reference to objects that I’ve grown up with, objects that were hand made or mass produced but due to their limited use for special occasions, they became precious and personal with meaning. By employing the use of innovative technologies, including CAD/CAM and Rapid Prototyping, my work also explores the ideas of what it means to be made by hand in contrast to mass production and the future of mass customization. Overall I would like each of the pieces to express a unique narrative and sense of longing for either what could be the past, present or even a possible future.
