"Structured Incidents,"-Opening Reception" Structured Incidents A.I.R. National Members Exhibition Curator: Charlotta Kotik March 4 – 29, 2008 Opening Reception March 6, 6pm – 8pm New York, N.Y., March 3, 2008 – A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce STRUCTURED INCIDENTS, a group exhibition of recent work by A.I.R. National Gallery Artists, curated by Charlotta Kotik. The exhibition runs from March 4 through March 29 as one in a series of events honoring women in the arts during National Women’s History Month. Opening reception to be held on March 6 from 6 – 8 pm. Structured Incidents brings together artists of different generations with divergent interests in an exhibition that is naturally eclectic. The exhibition features twenty women artists living all across the country - the A.I.R. National Gallery Artists. The artists explore a range of contemporary themes including cultural myths and fantasies, identity and the body, man-made artifacts and a reconsidered natural world. Despite the range of themes, the incidental is ever present in each artist’s imagery. These artists represent the wide scope of conceptual strategies, techniques, and materials presently contributing to the contemporary art scene. The National Artists represented in this exhibition include Patricia Barefoot, Carol Boram-Hays, Judy Cooper, Lisa Cooperman, Leigh Craven, Barbara Grinell, Ann Ginsburgh Hofkin, Leslie Kneisel, Jeanette May, Nancy Morrow, Marcia Neblett, Katsura Okada, Mimi Oritsky, Claire Owen, Joan Ryan, Marie Sivak, Crit Streed, Meg Walker, Taryn Wells, and Cynthia E. Winika. Structured Incidents is curated by Charlotta Kotik, former Chair and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Ms. Kotik served as the United States Commissioner for the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993, and curated the exhibition of Louise Bourgeois that subsequently toured internationally. She has been awarded the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation Award for outstanding achievement in contemporary art, and the Municipal Art Society Certificate of Merit. Since 1990, Ms. Kotik has been an art history instructor at the School of Visual Arts and throughout her career, has organized over 100 museum exhibitions. A.I.R. Gallery was founded in 1972 as the first artist-run, not-for-profit gallery for women artists in the United States. This year’s exhibition of A.I.R. National Members coincides with the city-wide month of events celebrating women in the arts for National Women’s History Month. A.I.R. Gallery is sponsoring this month long series of events including ArtWalks in Chelsea visiting galleries exhibiting women artists, panel discussions, and the A.I.R. & National Women’s History Project Gala and Honoring Ceremony. A.I.R. Gallery is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month with its National Artists exhibition, Structured Incidents. Location and Hours: A.I.R. Gallery is located at 511 West 25th Street, Suite 301, NYC. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11am – 6pm.
