Opportunity for Women Artists in New York City area

A.I.R. Gallery invites women artists residing in the New York City area to apply for our NYC Artists Program. In 1972 a group of women artists founded A.I.R. (Artists in Residence) Gallery—the first artist-run gallery for women in the United States. NYC Artist members benefit from a supportive arts organization that encourages experimentation, provides resources and exhibition space, and allows artists to shape the gallery’s programming. The gallery’s professional staff assists the NYC Artists in the development of their individual artistic careers and handles the daily operation of the gallery. A.I.R. takes no more than 20% commission on any work sold directly through the gallery and does not place any restrictions on an artist’s affiliations with other galleries. BENEFITS & COMMITMENT: Each New York City Artist presents a solo exhibition in Gallery I every 2½ - 3 years and is included in a summer group show every year. Each artist’s work is represented on the gallery’s website, in the flat files and in a binder at the desk. Additionally, all member artists may use the gallery space for meetings and events throughout the year. Artists may initiate programs and projects that enhance and extend their work and that of the gallery as a whole. A.I.R.’s Director and Assistant provide artists with professional and technical support. The twenty-two New York City Artist members serve as the board of directors and contribute to the financial support of the organization through membership dues.

Members' responsibilities include:

1. Attending monthly meetings

2. Serving on two committees each year

Financial Responsibilities include:

1. $500 initiation fee

2. $200 monthly membership dues

Artists working in video, new media, and installation, as well as traditional media, are encouraged to apply. A.I.R. seeks a diverse group of artists and approaches to art making. Current artist members review an applicant based first on the quality and maturity of her work and second on her expressed interest in participating in the gallery’s activities.
