X Factor: Bias in the Artworld, 6:30 - 8:00pm"
September 20 2005
Allen shook the art world with his May 2005 cover article in the Times’ Arts and Leisure section titled “The X Factor: Is the Art Market Rational or Biased?” This article sought to prove that art made by women fetches prices significantly lower than that made by men. He closes the piece by stating, “Asking why women’s art sells for less than men’s elicits a long and complex answer with endless caveats, entirely germane qualifiers and diverse, sometimes contradictory reasons. But there is also a short and simple, if unpopular answer that none of those explanations can trump. Women’s art sells for less because it is made by women.”
The event, organized by A.I.R. fellow Sarah Blackwelder, is the first in an evening event series called Night A.I.R., which will be held throughout the 2005-2006 season.
Screening of "Swaraaj: The Little Republic""
June 10 2005
"Swaraaj" directed by Anwar Jamal is a layered work. The screenplay is by Anwar's wife Sehjo Singh, who is also the executive producer of the film. "Swaraaj" was inspired by the fearless crusading zeal of Leelavati, a panchayat member in Madurai who lost her life in opposing the tanker mafia to get water for her village. The feature film is set in Rajasthan and is a tribute to the intrepidity and collective power of women. (from "The Hindu" Online edition of India's National Newspaper

Garrett Fisher Ensemble performance of "voICE""
September 16 2004
The interdisciplinary performance voICE, created by Garrett Fisher, combines original music by Fisher with voice, sounds and movement by AC Petersen and life masks cast in ice by McCagg. The text of voICE was dictated by the S.S. for the Hungarian Jews in Auschwitz to send to their Magyar families. The postcards, putatively sent from the Austrian resort town of Waldsee, obscure the reality of concentration-camp life

The Importance of the Exchange of Ideas Internationally"
April 21 2004
This discussion takes place as an extension of the exhibition, “Plays Well With Others.” The event is free and open to the public. The free flow of creative ideas is not just the life blood of the artistic community, it is vital to human progress, shaping our world from the best of what each culture has to offer. The panel will both reflect on the value of the exchange of ideas internationally and explore how stringent security measures and the global perception of American policy after the trauma of Sept. 11th may be affecting the flow.
