Ms. Hillis’ new series of works were begun late in 1997 after extensive travel through Scotland. When the artist returned to her industrial neighborhood in Brooklyn she set out to hold onto some connection with nature. Not content with literal representation Ms. Hillis discovered her own method to evoke a sense of place. Using handwriting as her means, she began developing a process of rhythm, layering, replication and evolution that echoed processes found in nature. By stripping letters from their context and meaning, a new language emerged, an encoded evocation of place.
