FUNTO OMOJOLA

Artist Statement

I utilize text, photography, sculpture, and performance as throughlines for inquiries regarding illness, disorder, inheritance, and processes of healing. My work is rooted in the need to photograph, write, and record the things I can’t see—the things that have marred me—by reinterpreting them. I consider my work attempts at mapping the disabling effects of disease while envisioning a language or theory of listening to a ruptured body. Asking where the ill body turns to for remedy and revelation when all else has failed, my pieces are sites of ritual, gestation, rupture, and folklore.

Funto Omojola is the 2023-2024 recipient of the Emma Bee Bernstein Fellowship.
