Geography of Life #3 Gathering on Heat

Sunday, June 22, at 3pm

A.I.R. Gallery (155 Plymouth Street)

Join artist Lizania Cruz in a consciousness-raising gathering on heat and its effects on humans and nature. Consciousness-Raising (CR) has deep political organizing roots. Similar methods were used in the Chinese Revolution and in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Building on these traditions, women’s liberation movement leaders in the 1960s, some of whom themselves organized in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, began holding feminist CR sessions for women.

The past ten years have been the hottest on record for the planet. According to the NYC Panel on Climate Change, in 2050 New York City could become as hot as Alabama, potentially impacting the number of heat-related deaths and exacerbating the “urban heat island effect” in the city.

Participants will be invited to share experiences around the following questions:

  • At what point does heat starts to feel unbearable? For you? For nature? For both?

  • What are your cooling mechanisms outside of things that emit more heat energy like AC, fans etc.?

  • For you, who has the responsibility to cool down the planet?

Participants will also receive a print sheet from the installation, Geography of Life #3 New York City, 2025.
