Step into the enchanting world of traditional Chinese water-based woodcut techniques in this immersive workshop. This hands-on experience will unveil centuries-old printing traditions.

In conjunction with her exhibition Scab, 2023–2024 Fellow Xinyi Liu invites participants to explore the techniques of traditional Chinese water-based woodcut. The workshop will cover fundamental aspects, including historical context, material selection, carving methods, ink preparation, and printing processes on mulberry paper. Participants will experience traditional Chinese woodcut styles and unlock their creativity.

Xinyi Liu works with mulberry paper and disposable wipes, which resonate with the thin and silky quality of human skin. She creates works that metaphorically mimic the processes of treating wounds to heal. Through her “medical” manipulation, they become her “second skin.” Like a doctor, she does surgeries for her work. She received her BA and BFA from Cornell University and her MFA from Columbia University. She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University and Syracuse University.
