Lenore Goldberg

April 2 – April 20, 1991

The exhibition of seven multi-paneled pieced explores the use of numbers and numerically derived images as cultural signs and formulas of cultural memory. Goldberg’s visual sources include Baziotes, Guston, Siskind and Jensen as well as Martine, Giotto, and DeKooning. She also refers to more incidental vernacular imagery and “outsider” art. These disparate references are organized across the divided, gridded panel paintings, onto which the encaustic and oil images are variously knifed, scraped, brushed, dripped, scumbled, and layered.
