Portland McCormick’s Incantations challenge the historical representation of women and the patriarchal foundations 0f traditional history through focusing on both the individual experiences of women as well as their marked absence in history. The work seeks to construct an alternative interpretation of history through utilizing images created by men in new contexts, questioning some of the most basic assumptions of most historical records, and in doing so proposing new interpretations.
